I Finally met Real Life British People.

Thursday 7 October 2010
Design as Communication class was yesterday from 10am -4pm. We did spend another hour tracing letters. Eventually, we got to go in groups to the Mac Lab and learn how to move our designs onto the computer using Adobe Illustrator. I have used this software before in classes, but a lot of these techniques were different. I'm excited to spend more time in the lab and work on my designs.

After class, I headed to Central to walk around and take pictures. The weather was phenomenal (and it's supposed to be all weekend. Yessss!) and the sky was so beautiful. I got off the tube at St. Paul's Cathedral. I hadn't actually been to this part of town before. It was quite pretty. I can't wait to go inside and see how gorgeous the inside is!

For my creative writing class we had to hop on a bus and ride it to the last stop and just write about our observations. I got on the first bus I saw, I honestly had no idea where it was going. It was fun to wander without a destination. I'm am really comforatble with the city that it didn't bother me at all to do this. At the last stop we crossed over the River Thames. It was incredible. I was on the top of a double-decker bus and the view was remarkable. This area (the very touristy area) is called South Bank. Everytime I am in this part of town, it hits me that I am actually living this life. I am actually living in London. Unbelievable. I got off the bus and walked back to the bridge and took a bunch of pictures. Like 50. That's not necessary to post all of them on here so here are some of my favorites.

After taking pictures, I met my friends Christine and Tyler. They live on the same floor. We went to a pub near Marble Arch (near Hyde Park) where Tyler was meeting a family friend. Christine and I assumed this guy would be our age. We were so wrong. We were at the pub with 60 year olds. One of the women had her 61st birthday on Wednesday. It was a fun evening. This pub (along with many, many other Englihs pubs)have a weekly tradition called a "Pub Quiz".  It's a trivia quiz for teams. If you win the pub buys everyone on the team a round of drinks. Luckily, we arrived a few minutes after the start so we didn't participate. I literally only knew 2 our 40 of the questions. In my defense, most of it was English trivia.  It was a fun night. Not what we were expecting but still fun.

Just finished class and headed home. Today was the first time I have really been lost on my own. I was coming to class from a different way this morning. I got off at the wrong tube stop, which was fine, I just got back on and went one stop further. When I got off at Oxford Circus, I was all turned around. I couldn't find the builidng eventhough I was literally two blocks away. It was so frustrating. I ended up being a half hour late to lecture. I was so embarrased to walk in that late, but what are you going to do? It was fine after I got settled.

I came back to my dorm to eat lunch and get my things together for the day. I am heading to a couple markets in Central. They are only open until 5pm during the week, so today is my one day of the week I can check them out. I'm excited!

Tonight, I think a bunch of us are going to a nightclub in Central where a lot of locals hang out, The Barfly. Should be fun!

I love this city! Never thought my life would be this cool!

  1. Lauren,

Your blog and pictures are amazing! Your cousins were looking at them too. I'm so jealous! I'd lover to go back to London and see all these things. We were only in London a day when we were in Europe many years ago.
