As I'm writing I am sitting in my very own "flat". It's what the Brits call a dorm. The difference is that we all have single rooms (reminiscent of Dayton?? Nah, way cooler.) Anyway, we all have our our bedroom and shower/toliet (The term "bathroom" is NEVER used here. People say, "I'm going to use the toliet.") I am living on the Harrow Campus at the Univeristy of Westminster. We are about a 20 minute tube ride away from Central London. I love this campus. It's just on the outskirts of the city, and it really feels like an American campus because of the location. Some of the other residence halls are literally an apartment building downtown. That would be incredible to walk out your door and be in LONDON but this suites me perfectly I think. I guess there are positives and negatives to every situation. It's kind of a bummer because our group of friends is now split up a bit. Elizabeth and I are still on the same campus.
Here is some of the not so exciting, yet pretty interesting things I have done and learned. Comparisons in American Culture and British Culture:
-Pay Laudry is 2 pounds to wash! That's 3 American dollars! Ridiculous!
-Bedding is very cheap here. I got sheets for 2 pound 50 (about 4 American dollars).
-McDonald's is considerably much more delicious here.
-Londoners DO NOT know street names. Like at all. It's very difficult to get around here because street signs are on the posted buildings and not overhead. So if you need to know what street is at an intersection or roundabout it's almost impossible to tell without walking across the busy street. It kills me that nobody knows what street they are one when they are walking. People know the major ones but there is only like 15 or those and 200 side streets. Just weird.
-The city is not set up in a grid like NYC or other American cities. It's basically a few major road and little ones divulging around it. Very confusing to get around.
-Brits are very friendly to Americans. Once they hear my accent they ask where I am from in America. Usually it's "Are you from New York?" Haha. I met one guy who actually knew the Indiana Pacers and Reggie Miller. I told him he need to watch American football and become a fan of Peyton Manning.
-English people do not have guns here. The stereotype is that the majority of Americans have a gun and that possession of a gun = physcopath. They can't understand why people would voluntarily "shoot up" their own people. I guess that makes sense... For example, in England a armed robbery even in a small town makes national news here. In American an armed robbery makes local news.
-People aren't violent here but they are petty theives. Europeans perception of people from England that they are theives. It's something like 80% voted the English to steal the most.
-Londoners wear at least one article of black clothing a day. Ok, that's not a true fact but it seems like it!
That's all for now. Pictures soon!
